Dr. Juan Antonio Ortega Redondo received the M.S. Telecommunication Engineer and Ph.D. degrees in Electronics from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1994, he joined the UPC Department of Electronic Engineering as a full time Associate Lecturer. In 1998, he obtained a tenured position as an Associate Professor. From 1994 to 2001 he was with Sensor Systems Group working in the areas of smart sensors, embedded systems, and signal conditioning, especially oriented to acoustic emission sensors and systems. Since 2001 he belongs and he is Co-Director of the Motion Control and Industrial Applications research group (MCIA Center). His current research and technology transfer fields include motor diagnosis, signal acquisition, smart sensors, embedded systems, signal processing and artificial intelligence, applied to measurement, predictive maintenance and support decision systems.

Dr. J. A. Ortega has supervised 3 completed Ph. D. dissertations related with signal processing and data fusion for electrical motor based drives, and he is currently supervising two more theses in the field of adaptive diagnosis algorithms and prognosis’ methodologies applied to electromechanical systems and processes. As result of Dr. J. A. Ortega’s research activity he is author of more than 100 referred National and International Journal and Conference papers in the field of processes, maintenance and control, such as “Feature Extraction of Demagnetization Faults in Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors Based on Box-Counting Fractal Dimension” and “Bearing Faults Detection by a Novel Condition Monitoring Scheme based on Statistical-Time Features and Neural Networks”, both of them published in the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, the most significant International Journal in the electronic industrial field.

Dr. J. A. Ortega has a significant technology transfer activity to the industrial sector by means of multiple national and international project participations, under private and public funded based agreements. Indeed, Dr. J. A. Ortega has participated, as MCIA Center Co-director, in the scientific and technical management of projects like “Contador universal para punto de recarga de vehículo eléctrico con capacidad de comunicación” with CIRCUTOR S.A, under the National CENIT project VERDE, leaded by SEAT S. A.

During the continuous scientific and technology transfer activity, Dr. J. A. Ortega has reinforced the international contacts with both, industrial partners as GOODRICH S.A. by the participation in the European project More Electric Aircraft, leaded by Airbus S. A., and research institutions as LTI Research Group of University of Picardie Jules Verne. The scientific and industrial network allows to his supervised researchers visit foreign centers so that they can be further trained, as well as participate in the preparation of international industrial consortiums technology transfer based.

Dr. J. A. Ortega coordinates and teaches courses in the Ph. D. Program in Electronic Engineering, offered by the department of Electronic Engineering of the UPC. This Ph.D. program has been awarded with a quality distinction from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. The contents of these courses are clearly connected to his scientific and technology transfer activity, and are fundamental for the training of future doctors and professionals in the field of mechatronic systems for electric vehicles.
